Implants Suitable for Hibernation Studies (Low Temperature Ranges)
All implantable telemetry from DSI is tested and designed with the temperature range of 34-41 C in mind. This is the range at which we are confident that all specifications can be met. Using any implant considerably outside of this range (such as for hibernation studies) is at your own risk, though the risk is lower with some implant models than others.
Implants that measure Pressure are not suitable for use at very low temperatures, as very low temps can change the physical characteristics of the noncompressible fluid and biocompatible gel used in the pressure sensing catheters.
HD implants are also not suitable for use at very low temperatures and cannot be recalibrated for the lower ranges.
The risk is lowest with the temperature-only implants (TA-F40-LF, TA-F20, and TA-F10) for the very low temperatures used in hibernation studies, though if using the F20/F10 you should configure it as a TA-F40-LF in the software. This is because the -LF designation removes the low sampling frequency cutoff point.
While there are some references from other customers using biopotential implants to acquire data at these low temps, particularly with the CTA-F40-LF implant definition, DSI is not in a position where we can confidently recommend a device that will always work. This is due to the effect very low temperatures have on the signal encoding and transmission; there are a variety of unknowns that we cannot account for in all circumstances.

In either of the above cases where you are using either the TA-F40-LF or CTA-F40-LF implant selection in the software, you will want to recalibrate the temperature sensor for greater accuracy within the range of temperature that you anticipate.
