Left Ventricular Pressure Catheter Options for Large Animals
About the Catheter
DSI's traditional left ventricular (LV) catheter features a 25 cm pressure catheter which includes a plastic suture collar near the tip, with only the thin-walled section protruding beyond. The white suture collar will be inserted until the suture groove is flush with the heart wall.
New options for PhysioTel Digital left ventricular catheters include a 30 cm long LV catheter with traditional suture aid, displayed above. Depending on surgical placement of the device and the animal model, customers may find this longer catheter beneficial to comfortably reach the heart and avoid being stretched or strained. DSI also now offers a novel method to secure sutures to the heart wall. This option features a silicone mesh LV disk, for a suture aid alternative, displayed below. The LV Disk LV pressure option is only available in 30 cm length.
Summary of LV Catheter and Tip Length Options
The traditional LV suture aid tip distance was measured and described based on the distance from the end of the plastic suture aid, not the location of where sutures are placed to the distal catheter tip. In comparison, the LV disk is measured and described based on the distance from where the LV disk, where sutures are placed to the distal catheter tip. These differences are outlined in the table below.

1For non-disk LV suture aids (01-14), this refers to the distance from the end of the plastic suture aid to distal catheter tip. For LV disk options (15-17), this refers to the distance from distal catheter tip to LV disk.
2Typical species are provided as a quick reference guide. We recommend consulting with DSI's Surgical Services team for catheter configuration recommendations when working with a new animal model.
