Post-Operative Recovery Period Recommendations and Group Housing
DSI recommends10-14 days of post-operative recovery for the for animals prior to starting a study, however, data can be collected at any time. During this period, animal will regain their circadian rhythms, regain body weight, and resume normal food and water consumption. If pair or group housing is desired, rodents should be allowed to completely recover from anesthesia prior to regrouping and it is recommended to only house with the same animals that were housed together with prior to surgery to help avoid any aggression issues. Large animals, such as canines, may be returned to social housing partners after 7-10 days post-op which will allow for adequate healing of the surgical sites.
